WASHINGTON ELEMENTARY ART SHOW FOCUSES ON
TOLERANCE With support and inspiration from
the Putnam Museum’s Anne Frank exhibit, 5th grade
students at Washington Elementary will be displaying
their creative artwork as part of a juried art show
and reception on Thursday, April 7th, at 6:30 p.m.
at their school. As the only elementary school
participating in the Museum’s Tolerance art show,
students, staff and families at Washington have
taken the opportunity very seriously. Students are
using a wide variety of mediums and materials to
express their views of the word “tolerance” and the
many emotional responses associated with the
concept. Current events and everyday life became the
inspiration for their artwork as they explored how
tolerance – or perhaps lack of it – can impact
lives. According to Principal Sheri
Simpson-Schultz, the students are looking forward to
showing off their efforts. “Their projects are true
reflections of the incredible talent and minds that
all of our students have,” she says. “Students came
to realize that the word tolerance involves many
ideas.” The work will be judged by distinguished
members of the community, including some working
artists from the area. Winners will then advance to
the final show at the Putnam Museum.
